On the surface as well as in the abyssal depths, the waters of the planet earth are populated by a multitude of strange and scary marine creatures. We would like to propose to you a list, completely subjective, of the scariest fishes in the world. It will show you how different the marine world can be from what we imagine.

The gulper fish

The gulper fish lives between 1,000 and 2,000 meters deep in temperate and tropical regions. It is, of course, a predator that feeds mainly on fish and shellfish. What distinguishes this sea bird and makes it frightening is its incredible mouth which strongly resembles that of a pelican, allowing it to swallow, with ease, prey larger than itself.

The stargazers

It is part of the family of perciform fish. It is found between 50 and 100 meters deep in the three oceanic basins. Of particularly horrible aspect, this fish manages with brilliance to mix horror and ugliness. The stargazers usually measure between 20 and 90 cm. It is a very poisonous fish thanks to its spines located behind its gills. This fish is also able to send electric shocks with its pectoral fins. It is also the king of camouflage. It buries itself under the sand and waits for the right moment to capture its prey. It is, without any doubt, one of the most horrible fish of the underwater world. How to fight against such an ugly-horror combination?

The Bathynomus giganteus

This marine specimen was first discovered at the end of the 19th century. The Bathynomus measures 35 centimeters on average for about 1.5kg. This marine creature is widespread in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean. It evolves at a depth of between 200 and 2,140 meters. In the Caribbean, it is generally closer to the surface, between 500 and 1,000 meters deep. The Bathynomus giganteus is a carnivorous creature. It can feed on dead fish and crustaceans. This animal is even able to swallow a small shark of 1 or 2 meters.

The Titan triggerfish

This fish is of medium size, it can reach 75cm long. It has a stocky and oval body with a huge head that represents an important part of its body. The titan triggerfish lives in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Pacific. It likes reefs and lagoons where it evolves around 50 meters of depth. Like almost all the marine creatures mentioned before, this fish is a concern because its teeth capable of shredding everything. The titan triggerfish has mainly a nocturnal activity. It is very solitary and defends its territory until the end. It is a fish that can be extremely aggressive with fish and humans that cross its nesting area. That is why, attacks of this fish are numerous, especially in Thailand.

The Ogre Fish

The ogre fish is present as well in tropical waters as in temperate or cold waters. Its ability to adapt is excellent. This small predator is able to live up to 5,000 meters deep, but it evolves most often between 200 and 2,000 meters. The abysses are its favorite playground. The ogre fish is, quite simply, the animal, which proportionally speaking, has the longest teeth in the whole marine universe, which justifies its name. They are so long that they can’t even close their mouths.

The anglerfish

This fish, which could rival the stargazers in ugliness, generally lives in the Atlantic Ocean on the coasts of Europe and North Africa between 1,000 and 3,000 meters deep. When it comes to playing the predator, the anglerfish shows ingenuity. Indeed, it uses a kind of light antenna to attract prey and feast in all tranquillity.

The Goblin shark

The Goblin shark can be found on the coasts of Australia, or even on those of the Mississippi. It can live up to 1,300 meters deep. Not much is known about this breed of shark, but just looking at it is enough to be scared. This shark is best known for its protruding jaw and sharp, powerful teeth. It is a real nightmare for crustaceans and other fish.

The Dragonfish

This carnivorous species lives at a depth of about 1,800 meters mainly in the Atlantic Ocean, the eastern Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific. There is very little information about the dragonfish. This fish has sharp teeth as well as a barbel capable of making light and attracting potential prey. It is important to protect yourself from the female. The male dragon fish has neither barbels nor teeth.

The Viperfish

This small fish, which lives at a depth of 1,800 meters and reaches a maximum of 60 centimeters, populates tropical and temperate waters. However, the small size of the viperfish does not prevent it from being considered one of the most terrifying species of the underwater world, and for good reason! When it feels a pressing hunger, it manages to swim with an impressive speed that allows it to melt on its prey thanks to its long and sharp teeth. It is a predator whose efficiency is formidable.

The frilled shark

It is rare, even extremely rare, to see the frilled shark. It lives in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans up to 1,600 meters deep. However, in Japan where it is very present, it can be found between 50 and 200 meters deep. From its appearance, we can easily guess that it is a predator. This shark, which has existed for thousands of years, is considered a living fossil as it has changed little since its origin. This shark appears even more frightening when you examine its teeth. They are particularly numerous and act like adhesive tape, offering no possibility to their prey to escape. Thus, in November 2017, a frilled shark with 300 teeth was caught.
